I clearly remember when my eldest son hit double figures and almost overnight metamorphosed into a sweet, polite young lad into this grumpy specimen of a "tweenager", who could only scowl at me, communicate in a series of snorts and grunts and insist that I walk at least ten yards behind him. My younger son, who is 14, is certainly a lot more vocal, with a tendency to chat back and contradict everything that I say, but hygiene has been an alien concept to both of my sons and is something that they believe is a term reserved for greeting a female friend of mine...

Peer pressure move over. There’s a more powerful influence in the lives of teens and it’s found at home.
While peers undoubtedly influence each other, social science research demonstrates time and time again that parents actually matter most. However, having parents per se is not the determining factor. Rather it is the degree to which mom, dad, or guardian actually monitors the teen’s behaviour that is a decisive factor in reducing the risk of pregnancy as well as drug, alcohol, and cigarette use in their teen.

We were all teens at one time for some many years ago even if we don't like to admit it. Many of us can look back and say our teen years were good, but with many ups and downs as we approached adulthood. Some of us maybe were lucky enough to have parents we could talk to about anything with ease. Today's teens deal with many of the same issues, but also deal with some very difficult issues that are more prevalent in today's youth.

It's sometimes difficult to find ways to be involved with your teen without totally intruding in his/her life. You want to talk to them, they don't want to talk to you (most of the time anyway). I've found the best way to connect with my teenage daughter is to enter her world and do the things she likes to do. There's a saying that if you want to understand your child's world you have to play with them, no matter how old they are.
