Keira Knightley has come a long way into a beautiful young blossoming woman since the days of her adolescent role in "Bend it like Beckham." She is an intelligent and provocative actress who captures your heart with her portrayal of Georgiana Spencer, who marries into royalty and does so to improve her family social stature. Along with her new found position and wealth, she finds her personal crusades, both politically and ideologically, which threaten the people within her newly joined social strata. Her husband is quite a bit older than her and his goal for her is to bear him a son to carry on his royal family name and blood line. Along the way, we learn that the Duchess grows from a young naive woman, into a politically savvy and socialite who in the end is a caring and loving woman who discovers things that are most important to her in her life, such as true love. The Duchess makes some significant sacrifices in her life decisions and becomes one of the most loved and revered royal figures of her time. In my opinion, there are a lot of similarities between the Duchess Georgiana and Princess Diana. While their royal positions differ, they both took on social norms and utilized their social position to help as many as possible without regard to outside appearances. I loved this movie and my wife and I have watched it twice thus far.
