Teaching Mother : 7-20-06
By Gina S. Lyon

My Mom has always been an example of Godly character in my life. She had open heart surgery last Wednesday morning. Before she went into surgery, my sister and I, were right by her side to see her off. She had such a peace on her face. She knew if something was to go wrong with the operation, that she would be with the Lord. My Mom, as far as I can remember, has been faithful to attend church. She has always kept the home... a place of cleanliness, a place of refuge, a place of peace. Seeing her laying there, knowing what she was facing, was very hard for my sister and me, yet she comforted us with her peaceful face.

"You have a tough job, that I can't even imagine doing when you homeschool your children!"  A nice lady commented as she was asking me some questions on homeschooling.  "It can be tough sometimes, but it is also very fulfilling," I responded.

"And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." Luke 9:23  Following the Lord through homeschooling will cause us to daily deny ourselves and take up our cross.  It is imperative that we keep the truth of God's Word in our minds and hearts so we don't become resentful toward our workload.

Rather it is our desire, as the woman in Proverbs 31:27 demonstrates, to "looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness."  Consider the results the woman experiences from this:  "Her children arise up, and call her blessed: her husband also, and he praiseth her." Proverbs 31:28

When we take our eyes off of ourselves, it is our children that we can clearly see.  Why would anyone choose to homeschool their children?  Most of us do it for our children.  We homeschool to have a meaningful relationship with them as we have the benefit of being with them during their best hours of the day.  We homeschool to give them the best education possible...they will not be carbon copies.  We homeschool so our children can fully pursue their interests instead of someone elses.  But mostly, we homeschool so we can teach and build on Godly character that our children may know Jesus and serve Him.

Are you presenting Godly character to your children?

Lyon Cub Warm Fuzzie of the Week:  Our Torah, now 4 years old, made her debut this week at the eye doctor.  After her examination was complete she asked the doctor, "Now, all that stuff is over, can we be friends?"

TM Favorite Quote of the Week:  "..the only true education comes through the stimulation of the child's powers by the demands of the social situation in which he finds himself." - John Dewey
