Teaching Kids to Pray
May 11, 2006, 15:14
In these times of uncertainty and tragedy, children can really get upset. Whether it is trouble at school, fallouts with their friends, or whether a terrorist has just killed hundreds or a hurricane flooded thousands out of their homes, kids have nowhere to go. They can’t just tune it all out like adults sometimes can, and the power of their feelings overwhelms them. But if kids learn to pray, they can channel these powerful feelings into a greater universe of hope, easing their tensions and enabling them feel a greater presence that comforts them and watches over them. If your kids do not know how to pray, here are some suggestions on how to teach them.

Moments for Mom - November 2005

Every day is a fresh start. A clean slate. One opportunity after another to make a good choice, a wise choice, a calm choice, a healthy choice, a holy choice. We women are notorious for being hard on ourselves. We beat ourselves up for the wrong we’ve done at the end of the day, but if we take a closer look, I think we might find that we’re not doing all that terribly....

Moments for Mom May 2006

Dear friends of mine told me a few weeks ago that they are moving. Pretty far away. For those of you who have been reading this column of mine for awhile, you know that I’ve been living in crisis mode since late summer. The moment she told me they were leaving, I went from walking wounded to walking devastation…I just don’t have the typical emotional reserves to handle this kind of loss in the middle of our current stress (not that it would have been easy at another time, by any means). When I said goodbye to my friend that night, my daughter, who had just seen us both crying, asked me if I were okay. I said I was sad and that I couldn’t talk to her about it quite yet. She left me a note that night on the stairs going up to my bedroom that said, “Mommy, are you shure you’re okay? Answer here: Love, Sara”. ...

Do you know what your child’s love language is? It’s a concept that Dr. Gary Chapman talks about in his book, The Five Love Languages, and it has shaped how I interact with my husband, friends and kids. Basically, we tend to express our love to others in the way we most want to be shown love....

Moments for Mom : August 2005

I was listening to a woman giving a message the other day and she was talking about being authentic. Her grown daughter was in the audience and at one point she turned her attention to her and said something like, ‘You always knew I loved you…I always took you to your events and activities, I kept you organized, I kept you well-fed, but I want to say I’m sorry for not being the fun mom, the carefree mom, the…’ And then for some reason, I tuned her out. And here is what I started thinking.

Dear woman, wife, mother, sister, friend, creation of God --- do you know what God most wants us to ‘get out of’ Christmas?
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men and women on whom His favor rests." (Luke 2:13-14)

My daughter, Sara (9), and I were working on her homework together the other day. She had to come up with a sentence using the word 'exhausted'. Want to hear something sad? Here was her sentence:...

I have a girlfriend whose son is about to undergo heart surgery. He’s less than a year and a half old and he is one of those kids that just draws you in…that everyone thinks is simply precious. Seriously, I’m constantly telling him that I just want to eat him up, he is that sweet. Now, I suppose I could be a bit biased,
